TRUE STORIES. TOLD LIVE. Berlin Style.
MAY 2016 Winning Story from Ewa Czech
Ewa Czech tells about strange encounters with people who don’t know her, but know someone who looks exactly like her. She couldn’t decide which ending was best: version one or two, so she asked the audience.
Which brings up a very important question in storytelling: do you give a Hollywood ending or simply the honest truth?
To tell the truth or not?
Ewa had a choice: to fictionalize the ending and give her story a happy Hollywood ending or tell the truth, which was rather an “everyday” ending. She chose the latter and the audience chose her as their favorite storyteller.
There was another story that evening, just as fascinating, just as vivid as Ewa’s – but the storyteller gave his story a Hollywood ending. We all laughed. We all enjoyed. We all knew it was a fictional ending, to a probably true story. Then again, maybe the whole story was made up?
In the end, the audience’s favorite story was Ewa’s with the unspectacular ending. But isn’t that how life usual is?
People want to be entertained. They want to laugh when they hear stories. But we also want a true story to be a true story. Under the premise , “TRUE STORIES. TOLD LIVE“, the audience will sacrifice the Hollywood ending for a meat-and-potato ending.
How big was that fish?
Next time you are telling a story, and have to decide about the size of the fish: you can add a few more inches and get a few more laughs. But if the context is: TRUE STORIES. TOLD LIVE. it’s probably better to keep the fish the size it really was.
Here is an audio recording of Ewa Czech’s May 2016 Winning Story:
Very few of us are telling stories, let alone personal accounts. Instead our audiences are drowning in information, statistics, and self-help.
We need more stories.
And if you don’t think you have one, make no mistake: If you’re living, breathing, and reading this right now, you have a story to tell.
I found success when I started sharing mine.
